EFSA European Shore Championship 2023 Noordwijk, Netherlands
The 2023 EFSA European Shore Championship was held in the Netherlands over the 10th to 13th May The venue was the beaches in Noordwijk a coastal resort in the west of the country. Nine of us and two partners attended the event.
Wednesday the 10th gave some of us the opportunity to get some practice in with small flounders making up most of the catches. Registration took place that evening at the De Sportvisser Noordwijk, the local angling club, where zones were drawn and a goody bag given to all 55 competitors. During the evening the hosts brought round typical fried Dutch snacks and herring. Very tasty.
Day One
A 6:30 start to hold a small birthday celebration for Amber, a Dutch junior lady angler with cake and coffee for all.
7:00 Bait was distributed on the beach and we then had the luxury of a being taken to our zones on a tractor and flatbed trailer. Later on in the morning the tractor returned with lunch packs for all competitors. This was repeated each day of the competition.
Fishing was tough with not many fish being caught. The run of easterly winds sadly had affected the fishing. It was mainly flounders with some bass and dabs that made up the catches. Paull Curtice and Barrie Senior managed third place in their respective zones.
Unfortunately, the Dutch results programme crashed but a knight in shining armour in the guise of Kim Bowden hove into view with the English programme. He was able to load this up with the competitors and get the results into it so they were available by late evening.
Day Two
The day started with light rain and the forecast of thunder and lightning at lunchtime which would have curtailed the match. However, the weather cleared and the match was completed. Again, the fishing was hard but picked up in some zones during the last couple of hours. Stuart Jones and Barrie Senior finished second in their zones with Allan Jones getting a third in his. It was a good day for Barrie as he was in sixth place overall. He also had a 53cm bass which turned out to be the longest round fish of the competition for which there was a prize.
Day Three
A different day again with sunshine and a light easterly wind. Another tough day with fewer fish caught than the previous two days. Reg Clough won his zone and Kim Bowden came second in his. Zone D, which Paull Curtice and Barrie Senior were in, was a disaster it was won with only three fish and five out of the eleven anglers blanked. Unfortunately, Paull and Barrie were amongst the five.
In the evening the presentation of awards and a superb buffet meal took place at the angling club.
In first place and European Champion for the fifth time was Arjan Rijnberg from the Netherlands with 33 points having won his zone everyday.
Second place went to Andreas Burkhardt from Germany with 31 points.
In third place was Miranda Koop from the Netherlands with 28 points.
