Results – English Boat Championship Newquay 2025

Thursday 10th July and anglers found their way to the Newquay Rowing Club to register for this year’s Boat Championship, catch up with friends and enjoy a drink.

For this year’s event two boats would launch from Newquay and two from Padstow. The draw had ensured that all anglers would fish one day from each port. Boat positions had been drawn previously during a Zoom meeting which was open to all competitors to ensure fair play.

With a forecast of a light breeze and sun for both days the conditions were almost perfect for the event.

Friday Day One

Atlantis and Che Sera set off from Newquay and Emma Kate and Pru Esther from Padstow.  As predicted the weather was very good and suntan lotion would be required.

Most of the fishing was done on the drift with just a short period of anchoring. Fishing was good with most anglers catching red gurnard, pout and poor cod (although a lot of these didn‘t count as not reaching the 20cm minimum size limit), mackerel, scad, cuckoo and ballan wrasse. Dogfish and a few rays, conger and bull huss were caught mainly at anchor. Kim Bowden had a nice John Dory.

At the end of day one it was close between the four boat winners on 100% 1st Mark Smith 100 points, 2nd Jason Williams also had a 100 points but only 36 fish to Mark’s 40 fish, 3rd Barrie Senior 97 points, 4th Perry Dack 90 points.

Saturday Day Two

A similar day to Day One, again a variety of fish being caught throughout the day. With another John Dory being caught by Perry Dack.

The results over the two days saw Jason Williams come out on top with 86.40% to add to his 100% from the day before and take the gold pin. In second place was Ray Barron to take the silver pin with 194% and third place went to Warren Doule from EFSA Ireland with 193%. Warren was also top Senior. The winners of the team events were: Two Man Open Jason Williams and Ray Evans, the Four Man Open Perry Dack, Andy Selby, Ray Barron, Neil Bryant and the Four Man Drawn Paul Hart, Matt Osborne, Ray Barron and Martin Bobbett. The largest bream was caught by Ray Evans a fish of 36 cm.

The presentation was held at Newquay Rowing Club on Saturday evening with a full prize table and a raffle. Chairman Neil Bryant made a short speech and then proceeded to present the winners with their prizes.
