English Cod Festival

Minehead 19th and 20th November 2005

This years Cod Festival held at Minehead was fished in the best weather conditions we have fished in for many years.

The Festival was well attended by 34 anglers including one lady & one junior.

Due to the tides we had a fairly late start so boarded the boats at 9.30a.m innear perfect weather conditions.

We were all full of anticipation as we left the harbour and soon got to our fishing grounds. We opted to fish about 1 mile offshore with the other 4 boats in from us with the closest being only 300m from the shore line in 12 feet of water.

During the day many Dogfish, Whiting, Thornback Ray, Pouting, and Conger were caught, but only 2 Cod came on board our boat. When we returned to port the other 4 boats had caught more Cod than us with a total of 23 being caught, measured and returned.

When day one scores were tallied Richard Cleal was the convincing winner with 4 Cod at 193cm. The longest Cod of the day being caught by Billy Cann with a length of 71cm.

Day 2 again started in perfect weather conditions (with a few sore heads as the later start meant late to bed).

Again the Cod were elusive with 24 being measured and returned the day 2 winner was Billy Cann with 2 Cod at 118cm. Another Cod of 71cm was recorded by Andy Smith.

When the scores were collatedd it was clear that Richard’s magnificent 4 fish on day 1, plus 1 fish on day 2 made him a clear winner on 256cm.

So congratulations to Richard Cleal on becoming this years Cod Festival Champion, Roy Shipway was runner up with 4 fish and 212cm, Billy Cann 3rd with 3 fish and 189cm.
